Castle Cellars

Virtual tour

The extensive cellars at the Litomyšl castle, a UNESCO listed monument, are an exclusive site with a unique atmosphere offering relaxation and diversion from the everyday routine. Thanks to their high vaulted ceilings the rooms do not feel crowded like other cellars. On the contrary, their grandeur makes the visitors feel relaxed.

For many years the cellars were closed for the public. After a reconstruction in 1970s they were fitted as a civil defence shelter for civilians and kept secret for any practical use.

Only after the social changes in 1990s the cellars were opened for the visitors. Sculptor Olbram Zoubek offered a collection of his sculptures for display in these attractive rooms. Together with other outstanding artists Stanislav Podhrázský, Václav Boštík and Zdeněk Palcr he renovated the sgraffito façade decorations on the Litomyšl castle during the totalitarian regime when he was not permitted to work and exhibit without restrictions. This job took full 17 seasons during which he found his second wife in Litomyšl. It is the reason why he donated an extensive collection of sculptures from various periods to "his" town. The gallery in the castle cellars gained a content that makes a perfect match with the rooms. The permanent exhibition of Olbram Zoubek's sculptures is being complemented with seasonal exhibitions from time to time. The castle cellar ambience is also suitable for the maturing of wine from the unique Chateau Litomyšl series. The wine was produced by Moravian wine-makers especially for this series. In this way visitors can taste wine while viewing the exhibitions.
